Crude Oil Reserves
Canada has the second largest crude oil reserves in the world, with an estimated 175 billion barrels underground or underwater. The only country with more oil is Saudi Arabia.

However, Canada’s reserves are mostly oil sands, which are more challenging and costly to produce than the light oil found in the Middle East.

Crude Oil Production
Canada is the sixth largest crude oil producer in the world.

In the last couple of years, oil sands production surpassed production of conventional and heavy oil. This graph shows how Canada’s overall oil production will continue to grow in the future because of increased production coming from our oil sands reserves.
