Dids you know...?

Even though a 30-year moratorium on oil and gas activity off the west coast has expired, there is currently no exploration planned for that basin.

Did you know...?

Canada’s largest oil refinery is in Saint John, New Brunswick. The Irving Oil refinery accounts for more than 40% of Canada’s total petroleum exports.

Oil and Gas in Canada
Canada is fortunate to have crude oil and natural gas resources under parts of every province and territory – and off each of our eastern, western and northern coasts.

Canada’s Largest Source of Oil and Gas
Canada’s largest source of oil and gas is the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB), which covers:

  • North eastern British Columbia
  • Most of Alberta
  • Southern Saskatchewan
  • South western tip of Manitoba

The WCSB has every kind of oil and gas resource, including:

  • Natural gas (mixture of gases, primarily methane)
  • Conventional crude oil (crude oil recoverable from a well using standard production methods)
  • Heavy oil (dense, viscous oil, with a high proportion of bitumen, that is difficult to extract with conventional techniques and is more costly to refine)
  • Oil sands (complex mixture of sand, water and clay trapping very heavy oil known as bitumen)

That’s why the WCSB is the source of most of Canada’s oil and gas production. Find out how much oil and gas we’re talking about.
